Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt” might just be one of those cases where the cover is better than the original — which is really saying something, because the Nine Inch Nails song is one of my favorites. Trent Reznor wrote “Hurt” about the desperation of being a lonely teenager, and Cash turned it into this lament about the alienation of old age. Just amazing.
