“That was the year when I was discovering that not all of the promises would be kept, that some things are in fact irrevocable and that it had counted after all, every evasion and ever procrastination, every word, all of it.” — Joan Didion, “Goodbye to All That”

Holy shit Dexter finale! This has not been the best season, but a most excellent cliffhanger sets up for an amazing seventh season in the fall. About damn time, etc etc. BUT the incest storyline…still unfortunate. Sorry. For some reason there was less of an ick factor with Clueless or the Royal Tenenbaums, but here it is just so wrong. So, so wrong.

Si es real la luz blanca de esta lámpara, real la mano que escribe, ¿son reales los ojos que miran lo escrito? De una palabra a la otra lo que digo se desvanece. Yo sé que estoy vivo entre dos paréntesis. — Certeza, Octavio Paz (trans: Certainty. If it’s real, the white light/ of this lamp, and it’s real/ the hand that is writing, are these real/ the eyes that see what is...

Procrastination!
Ah, the glamorous life of a graduate student: in the next 16 hours, I will cram for and then take two finals, and between them I will finish a 15-page paper. And then I will have an extremely large glass of wine, the most glorious nap ever, and then wake up Saturday morning to start my last paper, which is due Monday. What. Is. My. Life.

everyone in a hurry in clouds of ink like frightened squid. I had a friend who spun in the rain until her makeup melted and a scar remains on my retina. I had a friend who thought the secret was in turning a turntable backwards. One pill made you stronger, one pill and you could fly. I had a friend who crashed us through a cornfield and all the husks could do was sing but that was all right, it...

I might actually love Love, Actually
I don’t like chick flicks a lot so this is sort of a big step for me, but when how-did-he-ever-get-elected Prime Minister Hugh Grant falls in love with his totally normal-sized assistant Natalie and then fires her and then (SPOILER ALERT) finds the holiday card she secretly left him, I just get all warm and fuzzy and happy inside. Also, this.
